Matar Paneer


Matar Paneer is a popular Indian vegetarian dish made with green peas and paneer, a type of Indian cottage cheese.


  • 200g paneer, cut into cubes
  • 1 cup green peas, fresh or frozen
  • 2 tbsp oil or ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 medium-sized tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp red chili powder (adjust according to your taste)
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 1/4 cup fresh cream (optional)
  • Coriander leaves, for garnishing


  1. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they start to crackle, add the chopped onion and sauté until it turns golden brown.
  2. Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute.
  3. Add the chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook until the tomatoes become soft and mushy.
  4. Add the green peas and mix well. Add a little water if needed and cook for 5-7 minutes or until the green peas are cooked.
  5. Add the paneer cubes and garam masala powder. Mix gently and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  6. Finally, add fresh cream (if using) and mix well. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
