Rumkugeln-German Rum Balls

Rumkugeln-German Rum Balls

 Rumkugeln (German Rum Balls)

Rumkugeln- German rum balls Are delicious, rich, fudgy and packed with a deep chocolate and rum flavor. They’re especially popular around Christmas but can be enjoyed year-round.

Let’s see A Little History Behind Rumkugeln:

Like many great desserts, Rumkugeln started as a way to use up leftovers. Bakers would take chocolate scraps, mix them with butter, sugar and a splash of rum, and roll them into little bite-sized treats. Over time, they became a holiday tradition, and now they’re a must-have during Christmas in Germany.

Unlike the American version of rum balls, which often use crushed cookies or cake crumbs, German Rumkugeln are pure chocolate goodness—dense, truffle-like and rich. The rum adds a depth of flavor that makes them extra special.

Traditional German Rumkugeln Recipe

Rumkugeln are easy to make, require no baking, and taste better the longer they sit—allowing the rum flavor to develop fully!

Let’s see How to Make Rumkugeln

Now, let’s get to the good stuff—making them!

Ingredients:

  • 200g (7 oz) dark chocolate (the good stuff—at least 60% cocoa)
  • 100g (3.5 oz) butter, softened
  • 100g (3.5 oz) powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4-6 tbsp dark rum (Jamaican rum or Stroh rum works best)
  • 100g (3.5 oz) chocolate sprinkles or cocoa powder (for coating)

Instructions:

  1. Melt the chocolate – Break the chocolate into small pieces and melt it gently. You can use a double boiler (a heatproof bowl over a pot of simmering water) or just microwave it in short bursts, stirring in between. Let it cool slightly.
  2. Cream the butter and sugar – In a bowl, beat the softened butter and powdered sugar together until smooth and creamy.
  3. Mix in the chocolate – Pour the melted chocolate into the butter mixture and stir until well combined.
  4. Add cocoa and rum – Stir in the cocoa powder, then gradually add the rum. Start with 4 tablespoons and add more if you want a stronger flavor. The mixture should be thick but smooth.
  5. Chill the mixture – Cover the bowl and pop it in the fridge for about 30-60 minutes. This helps it firm up so you can shape it easily.
  6. Roll into balls – Once the mixture is set, scoop out small portions and roll them into bite-sized balls (about 1 inch in diameter).
  7. Coat them – Roll each ball in chocolate sprinkles or cocoa powder to give them that classic look.
  8. Let them set – Place them back in the fridge for another 30 minutes before serving.

There are some Tips & Fun Variations

💡 Like it extra boozy? Add an extra splash of rum or soak the balls in a bit of rum after rolling.
💡 Want some crunch? Add finely chopped nuts (hazelnuts or almonds are amazing in these).
